One of my goals with learning Chinese is to be able to do audiovisual translations precisely for that reason. Other languages eventually as well. Subtitles are SO BAD sometimes, and even with my intermediate level of Chinese at the moment, could often do better than a lot of them, which is sad. My first career, before pivoting to something else and then something else again was freelance audio transcription, so I just have to get better at the translation part of it.

Yes.. the dubbing. During my childhood I grew up with Dragon Ball Z from Japan. When they started dubbing it for the US audience in the first iteration of the dub... they had changed so many things for the worse.. dumbing down the conversation, making characters saying terribly stupid... like terribly stupid things to fill in the gap.... and worse, changing the persona of the character to fit their sense of justice/outlook. It was horrible. I'm glad there has been other iterations after that.

After giving it a little thought, I'd probably name a couple of other projects as my favorite ones. The first would be 'The sinner' series, and the second would be the 'Larva Island' cartoon series. In the former, Bill Pullman's character used to take long walks in the woods just smoking and not saying a word. And the latter hardly had any words spoken at all. And I was paid per runtime minute, regardless of the subtitle count 🤑

Oh, glad to meet a colleague here! Yep, when they change the story, it's just pure rage. But it also happens more often than you'd expect, especially in dubbing. They sacrifice the plot, the logic, and whatnot for the sake of a proper lip-sync.
