it’s occurred to me that there’s a huge difference between teaching and instructing, and i have a sense we’ve recently leaned too heavily on instruction in areas that deserve to be taught instead

Absolutely agree. Teaching involves understanding and application, while instructing is more about giving orders. We should prioritize fostering deep knowledge and critical thinking in all areas.
