I'm curious about the state of deploying frontends to decentralized systems.

Static site on IPFS. Lightweight client-side rendered front end framework, compile to static site, pin  it on IPFS. I like @fleek as a hosted tool for this.

What front-end framework do you normally go for?

Usually Vite + React, but you can swap out for whatever as long as it’s all client side. Routing can be tricky on IPFS, you usually need to use a hash router or similar.

In practice the hard thing with a lot of distributed services, like on chain ENS records or Avatars is that the load times are slower 

Not really that bad, but slower enough to effect users
