I had a terrible bout of insomnia last night. No sleep at all. The result of which seems to be that on my day off today the only thing my brain can do is replay a 15 second loop of the song I was mixing yesterday over, and over, and over again in my head. to the exclusion of everything else. šŸ˜‚

You can sit 3 pianists at a piano in front of the same piece of music, have each of them play it note-perfect, and you will get 3 different & recognizable results. Itā€™s true of any instrument. Fingertips and vocal chords make all the difference.

On the side of songwriter/virtuosos: -Lindsay Buckingham -H.E.R. -Prince -Stevie Wonder -Thomas Dolby -Michael Jackson -Darryl Hall -Walter Becker & Donald Fagen -Sting -Robert Glasper Virtuosity itself is not the enemy of creativity, but to your point I agree many people sadly think virtuosity is an end in itself.

Agreed. Iā€™ve had *A LOT* of this talk with artists big and small over the years. Never a good thing to say. In fact a successful indie label owner recently described Spotify in a convo. as ā€œa black hole of criming.ā€ Only positive response ever? Very big indie label with a decades-deep catalog & big hits.

I do (in a modified way). Used to be the way most mixes were done. Still is with a LOT of the most successful mixers. The listener never hears a sound individually, and interaction between sounds often massively changes the perception of what adjustments need to be made.

Iā€™m new to the onchain space, so forgive me if this is an ice-cold take. So far I see a TON of excitement. Huge discussions happening about advancing tech around the arts. But all of it is very insular. The tech needs to be a seamless consumer-first vehicle for procurement, and enjoyment. Otherwise neither happens.

Donā€™t make the mistake of thinking this is Napster 2.0. Majors learned that lesson by the time streaming took over. Which is why they took a 20% stake in Spotify in return for sweetheart US royalty streaming rates. This suit isnā€™t about stifling tech, itā€™s about clearing the field for them to use it themselves.

Training AI on copyrighted material is theft. But this is just a lawsuit for the labels to clear the field to use their own AI trained on the vast catalogs they own copyrights for. Rumor is theyā€™re already doing it (WAY beyond what UMG announced regarding vocal models). None of this helps creators.

Excellent post! Lots of great insights. For me the problem isnā€™t the tech itself. As usual itā€™s the people developing it. Right now those people are laser-focused on turning ā€œmusic creationā€ into an efficient profit-generation machine. Not tools for creation assistance by people.

Couple 100,000 new songs being posted/day with streaming algorithms that drive casual listeners (the vast majority) toward things theyā€™ve already expressed a preference for, and you create a massive reward system for similarity. Weird doesnā€™t get playlisted, so weird loses absent a major PR $ push.
