Just found out about a new (major!) hack of SSNs in the US. As a European, it's astonishing how much power the Social Security Number holds over American lives. Unlike our national ID numbers, which have limited use, the SSN is a gateway to so many aspects of life in the US—banking, credit, healthcare. Which would be fine, if it wasn’t so easy to be misused for impersonating someone else! I get that it’s hard to change system, but I cannot fathom the fact that the most tech advanced nation in the world is not even trying to mitigate such a huge security issue. It’s like having a single unchangeable password for your entire life! Is there something I am not aware of? https://www.cbsnews.com/news/social-security-number-leak-npd-breach-what-to-know/

Yeah it's a cultural thing. Americans are very averse to "big government" which is why a national ID system would never take off, especially one that is required. Almost all forms of ID within the United States are voluntary, that is of course unless you want to participate in certain activities (driving, voting, etc). Social Security Numbers are pretty much the only "national" number that people receive since birth. It's a ridiculous system that probably will never change. Guarantee you the day they introduce a national ID is the same day certain media outlets will say it's so they can round people up into concentration camps or use it as a form of social tracking.
