+100 to all points above. This thread makes me miss the "old days" of channels (<1 year ago lol).
If we think of channels broadly as a place for communities to form and hang out, I am still bullish on that as a concept/opportunity. Unfortunately today's channels aren't as good of a solution for this as channels a year ago.
Like @pichi says, the downfall started when the channel overhaul shifted the burden of spam to hosts, exacerbated by the fact that there were no great native solutions for easily/automatically managing channels, and like @yerbearserker said, channels are just streams of posts for the most part (plus a bio, single link/frame, pinned post, and cover photo), without much flexibility for customization and functionality.
It's not too late for channels to make a comeback. We just need to reduce the friction for real users to join, improve content sorting algos, make moderation easier/automatic, and give communities the best tools and experience for building their perfect online home. 2 replies
