Does anybody has a thesis on why smart contract wallet like Argent hasn’t taken off?

If account abstraction is the barrier (dApps previously need a lot of work to integrate with these wallet), then zkSync/Starknet’s default account abstraction might be the inflection point.

yes this is the killer. pushing for adoption of EIP-1271 will always be an uphill battle. 

There needs to be a good first party implementation of SC wallets to force implementation, and Gnosis is doing this with Gnosis Chain where they want each account to be a Gnosis msig.

I feel that MPC solutions are only being developed for insto custody and not retail (with the exception of Coinbase) though

My personal opinion is that MPC is advancing too quickly and will provide almost all the advantages that matter to users, so MPC wallets will grab the market share smart contract wallets are vying for.
