Just started watching baseball again now that both my kids are old enough and interested enough to have it on the tv w/out throwing fits. When did players start wearing mittens when on base (for sliding, I assume)?

Definitely started about a decade or so ago  it became more popular in the last 3 or 4 years. And yeah it’s for sliding. Guys were breaking fingers and tearing ligaments as steals became more aggressive.
