He really should have never used that account.  It should have been cold storage, only accepting NFTs from his other more active wallets.  Think account 1, 2.  account 1 is used to interact with dapps etc., account 2 only sends/receives with account 1.

I dig old computers and used bookstores. 

I don't have a great answer for you, other than there are pros/cons to the setup I suggested and you've rightfully pointed out one of the pain points for sure.  There are a lot of really smart people working on account level improvements which I think will solve some of these issues over the next few years.

On Phaver we’re working to implement some delegation protocols for safely connecting your PFPs from cold storage via a burner wallet. Delegate.cash and Eternal Procy Service are at least interesting ones.
