My favorite bit is "part-time crusader" which I read as you can be all-in, 100% committed to an endeavor, but you don't have to fully engaged with it 24 hours a day, and in fact you cannot be because burnout.

I'm not crazy about "reluctant enthusiast" or "half-hearted fanatic" because they make it sound wishy-washy. He was certainly not wish-washy about protecting wild spaces and the environment in general, though perhaps he was reluctant to be a crusader — I can imagine he'd rather not have *had* to work to protect wild spaces.

And yeah, context is different — when he talks of "desk-bound people" I doubt he was thinking of writers and artists and other's whose dreams are pursued through a basically sedentary activity.

To fight for and actually **enjoy** the land hits hard.

I do think it's increasingly  difficult to be a half-hearted fanatic with work's become more conflated with purpose, following your dreams, building what you want to see in the world, etc.

For a lot of people - myself included - work was never about locking your heart away and staring at calculators! Especially now with so many new jobs created by the internet, working is also a source of joy and pleasure. But that comes with its own set of problems too, namely, overwork, connecting self worth to business outcomes and burn out. 

So I guess the sentiment n this quote still tracks even if the context is different 😆
