this is really cool: a ritual axe for mountaineering priests of the shugen sect, dating from 14th century japan. practitioners of shugendo sought to “find supernatural power and save themselves and the masses by conducting religious training while treading through steep mountain ranges” (wikipedia). there are several of these in the collection of nara national museum (image belongs to them). https://www.narahaku.go.jp/english/collection/659-0.html
