In the early years of iphone development the UI team had a lot of challenges making a touch screen keyboard. They tried a number of chaotic alternatives including morse code. Eventually Ken Kocienda proposed the blob board. He got ownership of the team and evolved it into what eventually shipped. https://commoncog.com/c/cases/the-iphone-keyboard-make-it-or-break-it/
