One question: is being paid for the content we produce just a temporary dream? Or can Farcaster (and the projects that emerge here) really make this happen over the long term?

i think they'll succeed, but the path to that is a lot harder than we're admitting. it's not a tokenomics thing. people just can't be secondarily rewarded for work they'd /otherwise/ find rewarding. >kids love playing with toys >give kids gold stars to play with toys >and they'll stop playing naturally and require the reward instead. that's the needle we need to thread. reward people for the work they otherwise love to do without destroying the purity of that motive.

I think this is what makes crypto gaming a hard sell. People just want to have fun and, at least with gaming, any talk of monetizing it takes some of the enthusiasm out of it

yep. it is VERY difficult for something to be both for FUN and for PROFIT. A fun game might include a prize, but that's different.

the question to ask is: would those players play football equally without being paid? obviously not in the NFL, but generally. Anecdotes notwithstanding, the answer is, on average, nope. There's a significant drop off once you bribe the motive then rug it.
