quantitative analysis is the correct methodology only for well-defined constructs and usually only for well-defined questions messy qualitative research (esp ethnography) is the only way to discover new/emerging constructs and questions, and define them clearly enough for quantitative analysis to make sense

ethnography can also work as a tool for rigorously imagining possible futures, but it has to be a different kind of ethnography imaginary ethnography is ethnography of lived experience that doesn’t exist yet

which means imaginary ethnography attempts to generate insights into patterns and dynamics of a non-existent or not-yet-existent way of life by imagining taken-for-granted details and theorising about the context in which they might become so normalised as to be invisible
