Something I realized building lemon3. Over the last couple of years I've searched again and again how to attach metadata to a file uploaded to IPFS. For example a mime-type, a client could use to decide if it wants to download the whole file or not.

I have not found a satisfactory answer. But now I think that the answer is IPLD: A header (with all the metadata you want) linking to the actual content. You can share the header CID, you can recursively pin the header CID. And a client can fetch it, before accessing the main content.

If the metadata does not also need to be decentralized, Pinata gives you this out of the box. If it needs to be decentralized, IPLD makes a lot of sense.
