So, to generalize, you need to promote your app in cohorts that already have social connections, as strong as possible. And hope that this will get you vitality.

i think the number of connections and the propensity to form new connections is more important than the strength of those connections adults with families have a lower propensity to form new connections than kids at school/college

Oh, yes. "strong" was not the right word. It's about the frequency of interactions and the number of different people they interact with. Information has different velocity depending on the group.
