Karl Gerstner, Review of 5x10 years of graphic design etc., Hatje Cantz, English edition, 2001 The exhaustive and beautifully made book shows many examples of his seminal work from 50 years of graphic design and painting, each accompanied by Gerstner’s own explanations and anecdotes. The book vividly illustrates the ups and downs of the designer's professional life. Gerstner might be the graphic designer I personally consider to be the most genius and influential. The depth and innovation in his work constantly leaves me speechless. Karl Gerstner (1930–2017) is regarded as one of the most important innovators in typography, commercial art and corporate design. He is one of the foremost and ground-breaking Swiss artists and graphic designers, who carefully divided his brilliance between being a painter and a graphic designer and became a pioneer in both pursuits. A 🧵 — 2/6 Gerstner designed the seminal book by Markus Kutter „Gebrauchsanweisung für das Werk der Zukunft. Leser gesucht für die Zukunft des Werks“ (A. Niggli, 1959) and provided „visual poetry“ typographic experiments on the inner pages. It is a book that can be read from both sides, it has two titles and two beginnings, that meet in the middle. Translating the two titles can only approximate the wordplay in the original German language „Instructions for creative work in the future" and „Readers wanted for the future of creative work". The pages are bound in "french fold“, joined at the fore-edge and printed on the outer side only.
