Related to last post these photos (circa 2017) are homemade ISIS armored vehicles and artillery captured by the Peshmerga when retaking the town of Makhmur. ISIS had many capable military engineers and made up for their lack of armor and artillery by building their own in garages in Mosul and other cities. The vehicles on the left were particularly dangerous as they would be loaded with explosives and driven into checkpoints and military positions while deflecting bullets aimed at the driver. On the left is a garage-built artillery piece called a “hell cannon” that would fire retrofitted propane canisters as projectiles. Contrary to popular perception many members of ISIS were educated and professional members of former Iraqi military who joined the insurgency as a vehicle to combat what they saw as a hostile Iraqi central government set up after the war. In addition to these frightening vehicles they also used custom drones to create a makeshift air force that would sometimes drop IEDs near the base.
