As the US prepares to negotiate tariffs with China, it is worth noting that imports from China to the US have fallen by 8% since 2018, now accounting for just 13.5% of total imports.
The US is diversifying its import sources, with many other countries increasing their export market share to the US, including Vietnam.
In a trade war, some countries lose and some gain. This is why it is difficult for countries to unite on tariffs, especially if one country can benefit from replacing China, Mexico or Canada as a major supplier.
Even on important issues such as fighting the pandemic, protecting human rights, protecting the environment, gun ownership, legalizing marijuana, regulating casinos, or banning tobacco, countries still cannot reach consensus. So how can they agree on an issue that they can benefit from?
Of course, if you are a long-term investor, a trade war is not good for financial markets. 1 reply
