As the US prepares to negotiate tariffs with China, it is worth noting that imports from China to the US have fallen by 8% since 2018, now accounting for just 13.5% of total imports. The US is diversifying its import sources, with many other countries increasing their export market share to the US, including Vietnam. In a trade war, some countries lose and some gain. This is why it is difficult for countries to unite on tariffs, especially if one country can benefit from replacing China, Mexico or Canada as a major supplier. Even on important issues such as fighting the pandemic, protecting human rights, protecting the environment, gun ownership, legalizing marijuana, regulating casinos, or banning tobacco, countries still cannot reach consensus. So how can they agree on an issue that they can benefit from? Of course, if you are a long-term investor, a trade war is not good for financial markets.

The SEC is conducting personnel reshuffles, most notably the transfer of Jorge Tenreiro, Head of Litigation Advisory. He has overseen many important lawsuits against crypto exchanges such as Coinbase, Kraken and Ripple. According to the WSJ, he has been transferred to a position at the SEC's information technology office.

Ethereum just raised its gas limit (from 30 million to over 31 million) without a hard fork, because over 50% of validators agreed. The gas limit dictates how many transactions can be in each block. Gas is a measure of the “computational effort” of transactions and smart contracts. According to gaslimit (.) pics, the 24-hour average is around 31.5 million and could go up to 36 million. Despite the Dencun upgrades and proto-dank sharding, increasing the gas limit is still necessary for Ethereum to process more transactions.

According to CEX (.) IO stablecoins have recorded a total transaction value of 27.6 trillion USD in 2024, surpassing both Visa and Mastercard. USDT still dominates but market share, but decreased from 70.5% to 67.7%, while USDC increased from 18.4% to 21.5%, thanks to demand from DeFi. Solana has surpassed Ethereum and Tron to become the blockchain with the largest stablecoin transaction volume. Trading bots account for 70% of all stablecoin trading, with Solana and Base accounting for 98%.

Summary of the Fed press conference: - Inflation remains high: The Fed warned that inflation remains “quite high.” The rate cut follows three consecutive cuts through the end of 2024. - No rush to cut interest rates: FED Chairman Jerome Powell said the FED needs to see “real progress in inflation or weakness in the labor market before considering adjustments.” The FED remains steadfast in its 2% inflation target and is in no rush to cut interest rates. - Tariff impact remains uncertain: Powell stressed that the impact of tariffs on the economy remains unclear. “We don’t know the extent, the duration, the countries involved, or the retaliatory response. How the tariffs impact the economy and consumers remains to be seen.” - No contact with Trump: Powell asserted that he has not had any contact with President Trump, despite Trump's repeated calls for the Fed to lower interest rates. He also refused to comment on Trump's statements, saying it was "inappropriate."
