Mathematicians have a really annoying tendency to use the word "elliptic" to refer to things that have only a tenuous connection with ellipses.

Though I hold them to lower standards than mathematicians for this stuff, I also hate when investoooooors describe a period of exponential growth within a sigmoid process as something going “parabolic”—uhh, parabolas go up and then come symmetrically right back down, that’s not really what you’re looking for!

I find people more often make the opposite mistake, calling degree-3 or even degree-2 polynomials "exponential"!
