This got discussed a lot. The main goal is to move the chain registry to ENS so that launching L2s is permissionless and not dependent on a centralized repository.

Sure but if we’re using ens, then you can put chain information directly as a text record or a subdomain like optimism.vitalik.eth or polygon.randomaardvark.coinbase.id
