I really love Trader Joe’s and unironically think it’s one of America’s greatest untapped sources of soft power. It’s not just that it has interesting and good food at prices accessible to everyone it has positive labor practices and which are evident in how upbeat and hardworking the staff usually are. 

The State Department should perhaps develop a program to build Trader Joe’s locations around the world. They’re like mobile cultural embassies for the attractive American values of optimism and abundance. I say this as someone who lived abroad for years and always wished my friends could experience this.
