does the study account for dividend payouts? e.g. Philip Morris Int Inc. doesn't really have stock growth but consistently pumps out dividends higher than US-Ts

Yeah the study compared the gross returns of stocks (including dividends) vs a hypothetical basket of treasuries that are reinvested when they mature. Point being that only a very small few companies become great enough to even afford to pay dividends…

The pendulum towards low cost index funds may swing back to hand picked good companies (at good prices). Conventional wisdom can’t always win if everyone is doing it…
