Seoul is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Korea. It forms the country's only city of special subordination, divided into 25 self-governing districts. Population 9.4 million (June 2023), or 18.3% of the country's population. Forms the Seoul-Incheon agglomeration with a population of 26 million (2023), the ninth largest in the world. It is located in the northwest of the Republic of Korea near the Yellow Sea, on a plain surrounded by mountains, on the banks of the Hangang River, 24 km from the border with the DPRK.
