Aleppo is the largest city in Syria and the center of the country's most populated governorate of the same name. It is located in the nahia of Mount Simeon, Jebel Sem'an district. With a population of 3,868,000 inhabitants (2022), Aleppo was and still is one of the largest cities in the Levant. For many centuries, Aleppo was the largest city in Greater Syria and the third largest in the Ottoman Empire, after Istanbul and Cairo.
