Xi'an is a sub-provincial city in Shaanxi Province (PRC), the seat of the provincial government. The city has existed for more than 3100 years, and for some time was the largest (both in area and number of inhabitants) city in the world. Xi'an is one of the most significant historical and cultural centers of China; it was the capital of 13 states in the history of China - in particular, in the periods of Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui and Tang (the capitals of these states were usually located in different places at a short distance from the center of modern Xi'an).
