is deepseek a leap? I think the main story is 1. China caught up, 2. confirming foundation models will most likely be open source and commodity vs proprietary and expensive

Yep it is. Others are poised to make it too but they’re first. The assessment requires looking deeper than you’ll find in the public discourse though. Need to be in ai morlock conversations which I’m lucky enough to be.

Do you have a specific prediction for something that'll make it a clear leap in retrospect? (For example, if it turns out they really did train it from scratch for $5m, that would certainly qualify. Many are skeptical.)
