This is 100% untrue. They’re all powerfully committed to unexamined politics, and their absorption in narrow lives is the most political thing on the planet

well, there's more to politics than presidential elections; there's also general micro-adjustments to a variety of views that may not register on coarse 1-bit positions. For example "radicalization" is a gradual drift of compounding hardening of stances.

some people (me & most of my friends) are aware of their political beliefs and don't follow news & political commentators because they can't swing our POV.

e.g., what would need to happen so that instead of supporting biden you support trump? some big watergate-level event that would reach you anyway so why waste time

Disagree. Driving a pickup truck when you have no work need for one, and listening to talk radio as your routine drive-time entertainment is the opposite of tuned out. That's what I mean by unexamined. But you know it's real because they react *really* strongly if you push even a little on their lifestyles.

I think this is true for the middle and lower middle classes (most of America) but not really the working class. They’re mostly tuned out

i dont know. i know lots and lots of normies in their 20s (big city, emerging white collar professionals) and almost none of them give a thought to politics in their day-to-day

basically all just genuinely feel that politics is a waste of time, & following the same party as their parents whether or not they realize it
