It's a cosmetic resemblance. I definitely don't buy a tribes-all-the-way-down view of society. Tribal affiliations are totalizing for small minorities everywhere, but only one aspect of life for most. Contours of tribalism influence but do not determine the shape of society. Many other factors are more important.

I’ll bet with 100% confidence this will not happen for the vast majority. Most people, thankfully, are somewhat more interesting than that. This is why I fundamentally don’t buy the network states theory. Most humans would rather be unhappily entangled in voice than spiritually impoverished in monocultural exit.

definitely rings true. but i keep
coming back to the thought that if there is an explosion in the number of tribes then maybe many folks will find and be totally consumed by their one true tribe
