Grr kakao the most popular app has some weird security/domestic KYC bs Context: aging Korean MIL suddenly decided to start regularly talking to equally aging family in Korea she hasn’t been in touch with for years on… regular long distance, racking up charges 😖 trying to get them moved to a free app

In the sense you need an id to sign up for an ISP account? True in the US too… indirectly Or something more direct?

apparently my recollection is way out of date because it was the case that any service with more than 100k DAUs needed an RNN, a gov issued id similar to a social security number, for all users, but it got struck down for being unconstitutional way back in 2012 mainly remember this because people were getting sketchy shared/stolen government id credentials to play korean online games outside of korea https://catalystsforcollaboration.org/case-study-internet-identity-verification-system/
