Most masks were made of wood, linen, papyrus and gold, using varying degrees of detail and craftsmanship, depending on the wealth and status of the deceased. For example, the most famous Egyptian mask is the mask of Tutankhamun, made of solid gold and inlaid with precious stones.

In ancient Egypt, death was not considered the end, but a transitional stage on the path to another life. Masks were used to protect the face of the deceased on this path. They believed that the mask would help the deceased to recognize himself after resurrection in another world.
