Paula Rego (1935–2022) was a Portuguese-British visual artist known for her powerful paintings and drawings that explored themes of femininity, sexuality, and the human condition. Her distinctive style combined surrealism and narrative elements, often drawing on folklore and personal experiences. Rego challenged societal norms through her bold use of color and expressive figures. A prominent figure in the British art scene, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2010. Her legacy continues to influence contemporary artists, with her works held in major collections worldwide.
