An interesting human observation I've made is that the empathy I understand is about putting yourself in someone else's shoes to understand them. But from what I've observed, most people's empathy is just a 'phantom limb' of others' suffering, a sympathy from a position of power towards pain that they themselves can't handle. Compared to that, I prefer rational people who can objectively deal with pain without labeling themselves as 'empathetic'.
