But doesn't any funding mechanism that has a fixed amount of money to give away put people in competition with each other? What are the best ways to minimize this?

If you don’t encourage any competition, you’re going to get mediocre results imo

I think the size of the prize is the best lever to control balance between competition and collaboration.

If it’s large enough, groups of people will be willing to team up to split winnings.
