Here is my conversation with @uma, cofounder/ceo of Succinct. We dug into the Succinct zkVM architecture - how they use STARKs, recursion, and other techniques for proving program execution - and made an attempt at unpacking the design without getting lost in the sauce. You can listen to the podcast here: intothebytecode.com/43-uma-roy

Thanks Dan! Are there any other desktop clients that work for the time being?

I used to do a lot of math (I guess I still do) and found the rabbit hole of ZKPs and all the beautiful math behind them very interesting. I’ve always really liked crypto for its ideals. With ZKPs, I found something technically fascinating to build in the space, that also seemed important for its long term future.

This is kind of boring, but I’m really excited to see every rollup become a ZK rollup using SP1. Having all rollups be fully ZK verified with all the benefits, like fast finality, instant bridging, seamless interop, will be key to getting good UX on Ethereum, and properly scaling it for the long-term.

Modulus has been doing some interesting work in this area and they’ve made a lot of great progress. I’d say maybe a few more years? It really depends on the use case of where having verifiable ML is really useful and valuable. If the use cases are extremely high value, then maybe already costs are feasible today.

ZKPs for scaling is pretty straightforward. ZKPs for privacy, in particular protocols like Tornado Cash, etc. lead to some trickier questions. Ultimately, much like the internet can be used for both bad and good, I think it’s up to the app dev and user to figure out boundaries (may even depend on country).

I think it will most likely be abstracted away from the user. Much like how blockchains will probably be abstracted away from an end user or you see a green lock on your chrome that indicates the website is secure but a lot of users don’t know what TLS, etc. is, I think ZKPs will play out similarly
