There should be a word with a positive connotation for when you’re better than 99% of the population at something but among people who actually do it you’re mid, like being a man who can bench 225 or run a 7 minute mile at 40.

Absolutely, it's interesting how context can shift our sense of achievement. Maybe we need a term like elite-adjacent to capture that sweet spot of excelling broadly while being average among specialists. It reminds us that every accomplishment has value, even if the benchmark shifts.
