There are so many things besides Tiktok owned by Chinese companies that aggregate American customer data. The recently launched Marvel Rivals game (made by NetEase) is one of them. Banning TikTok would be digging a hole in the water.

TikTok has over 120 million users and growing in USA ā€¦ what other Chinese app or game have over 100 million users in USA. Honest question, Iā€™m curious. Iā€™ve been to China for business several times, so Iā€™m not a fan of them mining consumer data all over the world.

Thatā€™s not the point; US corporations do not report to the US government the same way that Chinese corporations have to report to the CCP. Just look what CCP did to Jack Ma when he was talking too much. And look how Tim Cook from Apple responded to the FBI when they wanted an iPhone unlock.

I canā€™t behind legislation that tries to shut down individual companies in the way the TikTok bill does. Itā€™s so targeted while also giving the US government more censorship power.

Thereā€™s no such thing as ā€œindividual companiesā€ under the CCP. In China all companies have to comply w the CCP. I have not read the bill, but I chose American over China policies any day.

Iā€™m suspect of the black and white way youā€™re painting China, but letā€™s assume youā€™re right I donā€™t want the US gov to dictate which companies are ok and which ones arenā€™t. The TikTok bill has strong authoritarian/censorship vibes and Iā€™m against that; while also being against Chinese authoritarianism

Do u know about Salt typhoon? Any foreign company that has over 100 million users in USA and can data mining consumers itā€™s a legitimate threat to national security. Just imagine WW3 breaks out and they can dispatch a mobile hack to those 100 million users? I believe the first option was for ByteDance to sell TikTok to a US buyer not to censor. I like Frank McCourt plan for TikTok. https://time.com/6978468/tiktok-frank-mccourt-ban-sale/
