From my limited understanding one gives money for equity & the other gives money for interest 

Is that anywhere close?

Can you clarify the difference in your mind?

If by financing, you mean debt vs equity, the biggest advantage to debt is its priority in the capital stack and the associated creditor rights. Debt has less upside though.
