According to Bitcoin Treasuries, MicroStrategy has 1.2% of the total circulating supply of bitcoin on its books as of today, making it the most publicly traded company in the world to hold the most bitcoin, far outpacing bitcoin mining firms Marathon and Riot, as well as headline crypto trading platforms Coinbase and others that are more “crypto-native” on a business level.

Microstrategy, a company specializing in business intelligence software, has adopted a radical strategy since 2020: raising funds to buy bitcoin by issuing debt. The implementation of this strategy began in August 2020, when the company announced the conversion of $250 million in Treasury Reserve assets into Bitcoin. The motivation behind this strategy was primarily to address the challenges of global macroeconomic factors such as declining returns on cash and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar.

On June 15, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a notice stating that Terraform Labs PTE, Ltd. and Do Kwon agreed to pay more than $4.5 billion in damages awarded as a result of a fraudulent scheme that lasted several years and involved crypto-asset securities, resulting in significant losses to investors when the scheme collapsed.
