In 1983, Koko the gorilla, famous for her ability to communicate using sign language, asked for a cat for Christmas. Her handlers initially gave her a stuffed toy cat, but Koko rejected it and repeatedly signed the word "sad." Deeply touched by her emotional reaction, her caretakers decided to grant her wish the following year. On her birthday, July 4, 1984, they let her choose a kitten from a litter. Koko gently picked a gray and white tailless kitten, whom she named All Ball. The two quickly bonded, with Koko cradling, grooming, and playing with her new companion. Their relationship received widespread attention, offering a glimpse into the emotional depth and empathy of non-human animals. Koko's connection with All Ball challenged traditional views of animal intelligence and emotion, making her story one of the most memorable in the history of animal-human communication. It remains a powerful symbol of interspecies affection.
