In 1983, Koko the gorilla, famous for her ability to communicate using sign language, asked for a cat for Christmas. Her handlers initially gave her a stuffed toy cat, but Koko rejected it and repeatedly signed the word "sad."
Deeply touched by her emotional reaction, her caretakers decided to grant her wish the following year.
On her birthday, July 4, 1984, they let her choose a kitten from a litter. Koko gently picked a gray and white tailless kitten, whom she named All Ball. The two quickly bonded, with Koko cradling, grooming, and playing with her new companion.
