We should normalise discussing pre-tax salaries.

I'm not talking about just your personal tax i'm talking about all the other lovely stuff the gov make your employer pay to put money in your pocket.

Put whatever name on it you want - its all tax and its all money your company doesn't keep so can't pay you.

Some of the *real tax* rates across europe are insane.

right. I see what you mean. The employer NIC! 

In this case Germany was similar too. 

There's a "gross salary" which only includes the taxes the employee is liable for, then there's a "gross gross salary" when taking into account the entire outgoings from a company for said employee.

In the UK we have gross salary for sure but it doesn't take into account employer national insurance contributions (13% on top).

It would be too complicated to allocate an amount per person but this also doesnt include business rates, corp tax etc etc.
