Everyone cheering for Canada to become the 51st US state should know that the single uniting piece of Canadian culture is “not American”. It might sound tongue-in-cheek but it’s deeply entwined in our history. It’s hilarious/sad that Canadians are like this but it’s one of the only things we all agree on. I’d bet most Canadians would take a lower standard of living than capitulate to becoming American (with the possible exception of Albertans).

Try it the other way around, “most Americans would take a lower standard of living than capitulate to becoming Canadian” Agree? In general: self-sovereign entities don’t want to be swallowed up by other self-sovereign entities. Makes sense, doesn’t it? Doesn’t have anything to do with respect.
