Everyone cheering for Canada to become the 51st US state should know that the single uniting piece of Canadian culture is ā€œnot Americanā€. It might sound tongue-in-cheek but itā€™s deeply entwined in our history. Itā€™s hilarious/sad that Canadians are like this but itā€™s one of the only things we all agree on. Iā€™d bet most Canadians would take a lower standard of living than capitulate to becoming American (with the possible exception of Albertans).

I never made a claim about 51st state. Was just asking a question. :)

Iā€™m reading a book on how American identity had influenced the countryā€™s foreign policies and overall relationships with everyone non-American. The relationship with Canada ever since the Revolutionary war has beenā€¦ interesting, to say the least Never been to Canada but can easily believe how ā€œbeing not Americanā€ can unite people

I feel like, itā€™s nonsense to have Canada become the 51st state. On the one hand it feels like a joke, on the other posts like above can begin to be spun in such a way that people will side with it. I feel like we all need to take a moment to just sit down and chill out. Canada is neat, but Iā€™d rather it still just be Canada.
