Everyone cheering for Canada to become the 51st US state should know that the single uniting piece of Canadian culture is “not American”. It might sound tongue-in-cheek but it’s deeply entwined in our history. It’s hilarious/sad that Canadians are like this but it’s one of the only things we all agree on. I’d bet most Canadians would take a lower standard of living than capitulate to becoming American (with the possible exception of Albertans).

I’m reading a book on how American identity had influenced the country’s foreign policies and overall relationships with everyone non-American. The relationship with Canada ever since the Revolutionary war has been… interesting, to say the least Never been to Canada but can easily believe how “being not American” can unite people

Growing up as a first-gen immigrant, i always assumed there was some “Canadian identity”, but if it exists it’s hard to define. Comparing globally, Canada and US are VERY similar. Maybe it’s a case of the closer you are the more you want to keep a separate identity.
