A salary that would be comfortable anywhere else is now paycheck to paycheck for Americans I wonder if we’ll see an exodus of remote workers as a result. Is this why major American corporations enforce strict in-office work mandates despite overwhelming evidence that remote workers are more productive?

It has crossed my mind a few times to move to some cheap neighborhood in the Midwest.

Think carefully about what brings you joy. It will be cheaper. But there are reasons for that. It van be the right move for the right person, but it can also be very wrong, as depending on where you're coming from, it can be very, very different culturally. (As a small town wisconsin boy who loves it, but also moved away to experience more beyond the limits of small town Midwestern life)
