This ties in to why I think we need to cultivate a culture of circulation of responsibilities within communities. Not only does it keep power/knowledge/control from centralizing over time, but it also allows for easier offboarding!

In a high trust network it should be possible to have more lateral flexibility. 

How are you thinking about the trade-off between stability and flexibility? For the individual as well the groups. Maybe call it the commitment vs freedom trade-off?

What are some of your approaches? 

A component I've been thinking about is staged growth, with appropriate buckets for participants. Here's a stab at a flow:

- start slow with a core group, minimize external exposure 

- as organic discovery happens start embracing new members and ideas as they reflect the core mission in their contributions

- start opening to the public, but keep them engaging on the periphery to act as a funnel for value aligned contributors to rise up organically

- start expanding the core and distributing ownership & control to members as they move through the funnel

- formalize onboarding iteratively as a natural structure starts to emerge

- as leadership grows, core founders start to phase out of task level activities so that a culture of circulation of power evolves, instead of power concentrating over time
