This photo popping up on my memories today was timely after yesterday's post about creating green spaces. Another green space I made at my previous house! Gardens are great, and I love growing food! But sometimes you just need a soft green space to relax and let the doggies cool off!

I was very excited about this little piece of lawn, because it surrounded this ancient apple tree that I was committed to rehabilitating. Did you know that grass actually helps break down necessary nutrients like iron to make them more accessible to certain fruit bearing plants? Intercropping like this can often replace the need for specific manual amendments to maintaining optimum nutrient balance for the fruit.

The first year required some patience, as both the tree and the lawn needed some time to grow in. But it definitely showed promise!

By the next year both the tree and the lawn was exploding with growth, providing the most satisfying display that second and all subsequent springs.

Many meals were grown in this tiny food forest of a yard, and this beautiful green space in the middle provided ample comfort to enjoy them under the sweet blossoms of the wise old apple tree.
