1. Get involved with passion projects 
2. Get paid in magic internet money that just gets rugged
3. Do side work while you build your skills & network
4. Repeat 1 expecting different results

Agreed. Lots of ppl experimenting with ideas, but everything still just results in getting rugged the longer you contribute.

Only way to benefit financially is to extract and exit.

We (web3 builders) need to do a better job solving problems with “passion projects”.

That may reduce some of these cycles.
